Asia’s largest stock market, in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
The Japan Exchange Group (Tokyo Stock Exchange) in Tokyo, Japan, is open 09:00–15:30 local time, with a lunch break 11:30–12:30, Monday to Friday. It pauses for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30. Today that is to in UTC.
When Tokyo opens, liquidity in JPY rises; when it closes, it thins out. The hours when two big centres overlap — London with New York, Tokyo with Sydney — are when spreads are tightest and the large moves usually start. Book I of the ForeXistenZ trilogy teaches how to plan your day around these session hand-offs.
The regular session of TSE runs 09:00–15:30 local time, with a lunch break 11:30–12:30 (Asia/Tokyo), Monday to Friday. It is closed on Japan public holidays. Opening and closing auctions are not included.
The live box on this page works it out from TSE’s regular hours in Tokyo time, so it is always current; it shows OPEN, LUNCH BREAK or CLOSED and when the next change comes. Public holidays are not shown.
The benchmark followed here is the Nikkei 225. Its delayed public quote appears on this page.
Shares on TSE are priced in JPY. A foreign investor buying them must first buy JPY, so heavy equity flows into Japan show up in the JPY exchange rate.
